Can You Drink Too Much Water?

You've probably heard that it's important to 'drink plenty of fluids' or simply 'drink lots of water'. There are excellent reasons for drinking water, but have you ever wondered if it's possible to drink too much water. Here's what you need to know:
In a word, yes. Drinking too much water can lead to a condition known as water intoxication and to a related problem resulting from the dilution of sodium in the body, hyponatremia. Water intoxication is most commonly seen in infants under six months of age and sometimes in athletes. A baby can get water intoxication as a result of drinking several bottles of water a day or from drinking infant formula that has been diluted too much. Athletes can also suffer from water intoxication. Athletes sweat heavily, losing both water and electrolytes. Water intoxication and hyponatremia result when a dehydrated person drinks too much water without the accompanying electrolytes.
What Happens During Water Intoxication?
When too much water enters the body's cells, the tissues swell with the excess fluid. Your cells maintain a specific concentration gradient, so excess water outside the cells (the serum) draws sodium from within the cells out into the serum in an attempt to re-establish the necessary concentration. As more water accumulates, the serum sodium concentration drops -- a condition known as hyponatremia. The other way cells try to regain the electrolyte balance is for water outside the cells to rush into the cells via osmosis. The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from higher to lower concentration is called osmosis. Although electrolytes are more concentrated inside the cells than outside, the water outside the cells is 'more concentrated' or 'less dilute' since it contains fewer electrolytes. Both electrolytes and water move across the cell membrane in an effort to balance concentration. Theoretically, cells could swell to the point of bursting.

It's Not How Much You Drink, It's How Fast You Drink It!
From the cell's point of view, water intoxication produces the same effects as would result from drowning in fresh water. Electrolyte imbalance and tissue swelling can cause an irregular heartbeat, allow fluid to enter the lungs, and may cause fluttering eyelids. Swelling puts pressure on the brain and nerves, which can cause behaviors resembling alcohol intoxication. Swelling of brain tissues can cause seizures, coma and ultimately death unless water intake is restricted and a hypertonic saline (salt) solution is administered. If treatment is given before tissue swelling causes too much cellular damage, then a complete recovery can be expected within a few days.
The kidneys of a healthy adult can process fifteen liters of water a day! You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time. As a general guideline, most adults need about three quarts of fluid each day. Much of that water comes from food, so 8-12 eight ounce glasses a day is a common recommended intake. You may need more water if the weather is very warm or very dry, if you are exercising, or if you are taking certain medications. The bottom line is this: it's possible to drink too much water, but unless you are running a marathon or an infant, water intoxication is a very uncommon condition.

While all beverages contribute to your total fluid intake, some may actually dehydrate you, such as caffeinated-beverages and alcohol. Water-filled fruits and vegetables, such as melon or celery, also help to increase your fluid intake.
Despite water's many sources, most of us don't get enough. (And if you exercise or work in a physically-demanding job, you need even more water than the average person to replenish the fluid your body loses when you sweat.)
Being dehydrated can affect you in many ways. Side effects of dehydration include headaches, poor concentration and fatigue. Staying well hydrated can bring many positive effects such as increased energy and stamina, improved digestion and decreased water weight (and resulting bloating). Staying hydrated may also help keep you from overeating -- we often tend to reach for food when we're actually thirsty (we think we are hungry).
Waiting until you feel thirsty to drink something isn't the best way to prevent dehydration. In fact, you could be dehydrated right now and not even realize it. The best way to begin the habit of staying better hydrated is to do just that -- create habits. For instance, I began feeling much better throughout my mornings when I started drinking a full glass of water upon waking.
Here are some ways to work more water into you day:

  • Drink a glass before every meal.
  • Alternate other beverages with one glass of water.
  • Ask for a glass of water alongside soda, coffee or tea at restaurants.
  • Keep a bottle of water at your desk.
  • Drink water in the afternoon when your energy level dips (and before you hit the vending machine!).
  • Drink a full glass of water both before and after exercising.
  • If you start feeling a little off (slightly nauseated) or a headache coming on (a sign of dehydration), drink a glass of water.
  • Switch to 12-oz. water glasses at home instead of 8-oz. ones.
  • Keep a bottle of water in your car when the weather is mild.

One hundred percent fruit juice also contributes fluid to our diet, as do other beverages such as coffee and soda, though in small amounts. Caffeine, however, is dehydrating and can cause you to lose water. Soda and many fruit juices are a huge source of wasted calories in our diet. Try seltzer water with a splash of 100% fruit juice instead of soda for flavor without as much of a caloric

How to Apply Lipstick Perfectly


The wrong color lipstick, heavy lip liner and lips that have been "drawn on" are common makeup mistakes that will ruin your overall look. Many women who are unsure of how to wear lipstick skip that step totally leaving makeup looking unbalanced.

Perfect looking lips are attainable and begin with an ideal lip line. You can have lips that look like a makeup artist did them simply by following a few important steps.

1. When applying foundation continue over the lips to provide a base for lip liner and lipstick.

2. Keeping your mouth-closed trace a fine line around the lips with a sharp pencil. A blunt pencil will make blending more difficult. Start at the v of the top lip and move outward to lip corners by making short strokes (rest your hand on your chin for better control). After you have penciled in the top lip, begin from the middle of the bottom lip and move outward also. Follow the natural lip line.

3. To make lips look larger follow the outer edge of the natural lip line making sure not to go over the natural lip line. To make lips look smaller follow the inside of the natural lip line.

4. Lipstick will stay on longer if the whole lip is filled in with lip liner before lipstick is applied. If you decide to use this technique, be aware that darker lip liner will darken the look of your lipstick. And, if you are going for a light look use a light lip liner.

5. Now that lips are filled in, apply lipstick with a lipstick brush (using a lip brush will give you more control). When lipstick has been applied, with lips closed, lay a tissue across both lips to blot.

You are ready to go, with perfect lips. Continue with touch ups during the day. If you are not used to wearing lipstick, it will probably take awhile to get used to having your lips done and not "eating" the lipstick. The plus to having nice lips, aside from the obvious, is you will never be plagued with dry lips again an over time they become softer. That's certainly reason enough to take care of your lips.

Know your skin type


Taking care of your skin might be very important for you, so before you spend money on skin products, it is important to know what type of skin you have and what kind of care it needs.

1- Dry Skin: If your skin has a strong tendency toward dehydration, lacks oil, and has few breakouts if any at all, it is considered dry. In more extreme cases, dry skin lacks elasticity and can be extremely sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold temperatures. Wash your face once a day with a rich, creamy cleanser and warm water. Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry. Use toner to help with that tight and flaky feeling of dehydration. Avoid toners and makeup that contain alcohol as alcohol-based products have a drying effect on skin.

2- Oily Skin:If your skin is oily, it usually has a lot of shine to it very soon after cleansing and the pores are generally slightly enlarged. It is more prone to pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads than other skin types and is coarser in texture. Your skin tends to attract more dirt than dry skin, so wash your face twice a day with a gentle non-foaming cleanser and warm water. Rinse with warm water. Use an alcohol-free, hydrating toner to help remove additional residue. Oil blotting sheets through out the day can help control shine, and it takes as little as 3 minutes after lunch.

3- Normal Skin: Some consider normal skin to be Combination skin, but it is not. If your skin is marked by oily skin in the T zone and dry, taut skin on the cheeks, and changes with seasons (dryer in winter, oilier in summer) it is considered normal. Normal skins can also be 'Normal-To's' as in normal to oily or normal to dry. Wash your face with cleansers that are designed for your normal/normal-to skin type. Wipe an alcohol free, hydrating toner all over the face. Apply moisturizer more frequently to dry skin.

4- Sensitive Skin: Please note that you may have sensitive skin AND normal, oily, or dry. If your skin has allergic reactions to beauty products and is usually sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold weather, it is sensitive. Sensitivity can show up in rash,redness, inflammation, acne, and dilated capillaries. Look for cleansers, toners, makeup, and moisturizers that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. Cleanse, tone and moisturize with gentle products everyday. The idea for your skin is to always choose products with a soothing benefit. Some common ingredients to look for are: chamomile, azulene, bisabolol, allantoin, lavender, camphor, calamine, rosemary, thyme, aloe vera etc.

5- Combination Skin: Combination skin is truly two extreme skin types on one face. These situations occur when there is acne and a lot of oil in one area when the rest of the skin is generally not producing oil and dry. Two common examples are a dry skin with papular and pustular acne on the cheeks or a normal skin with inflamed papular and pustular acne in the chin and mouth area. For Combination skins, treat each area appropriately as described above. If the acne is severe, consult a dermatologist or esthetician.You need to watch out for your skin.

1. Opt for oil-based moisturizers
“Dr. Shamban says the main switch in your winter skin care regimen should be selecting an oil-based moisturizer, so look for one that contains avocado or almond oil. These “will lock the moisture in your skin and build a protective layer on the top surface,” says Dr. Shamban. “Water based moisturizers can be damaging to your skin, especially during cold climate, because the water freezes in your skin.” Apply liberally whenever your skin feels dry.

2. Don’t forget your sunscreen
Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean the sun isn’t strong, especially when it can reflect off snow. Dr. Shamban suggests applying an SPF 15-30 to your face (and hands if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply if you’re spending the day outside.

3. Use a humidifier
Heat can dry out more than just your sinuses. With added moisture in the air, your skin won’t be as flaky.

4. Avoid very hot water
It may feel good, but Dr. Shamban says you should never shower, bathe or wash your face with extremely hot water. “It can not only break the capillaries in the face, but also break down the lipid barriers in the skin, which will lead to a loss of moisture.” She says adding a few drops of Jojoba or almond oil to a bath can nourish and hydrate dry skin.

5. Hydrate skin while it's damp
Applying moisturizer immediately after taking a shower or washing your face will help lock-in moisture.

6. Never ever lick your lips
Stash soothing lip balms in your purse, car, and desk to keep lips from chapping. Dr. Shamban says you can also apply few drops of olive oil mixed with few drops of honey to your lips for few minutes to hydrate.

7. Swap your liquid foundation for a cream formula
Liquid foundation can actually freeze! “One of the benefits of using cream is that it will give your skin an extra protective layer and help keep the moisture in your skin,” says Dr. Shamban.

8. Don’t ever leave the house with wet hair
Have you ever had your hair freeze in the cold? This will cause damage to your scalp and hair can actually break off, so it may be better to shower in the evening. Since hair can get dry and damaged just like our skin, protect it by conditioning more in the winter and blow dry hair on a cooler setting.

9. Wear a hat to prevent a dry scalp
Besides keeping you warm, a hat will hold in moisture and protect your scalp from dry air and flaking. Make sure your hat is not too tight and made of breathable material.

10. Give your hands extra love
“The skin on our hands are extremely thin, which means they already have a limited amount of moisture,” says Dr. Shamban. Apply moisturizer frequently, especially after washing your hands, and avoid cotton gloves, which absorb moisture and stay wet.

How to Create the Smoky Eyed Look


Have you ever wanted to copy the smoldering, smoky eyed look seen on the red carpet or fashion runways? Now is your chance. Creating the look can be fun and the results can be dramatic. Your makeup can look like it was created by a professional when you follow these steps.




Put some concealer under your eye to cover any dark circles. Brush a sheer or matte (whichever you prefer) light pink shadow over your eyelid, using a medium sized brush.


Brush a medium gray shadow into the crease of your eye. Be sure to use a medium sized brush in a back and forth sweeping motion. Brush a dark gray shadow into the outer half of your crease on top of the lighter gray, and on to the outer half of your lid on top of the pink shadow as well.


Line the top of your lids as close to the lash line as possible with a black liquid liner in a thin line, getting slightly thicker as you reach the outside corner. Line the bottom inside rim of your eye with a black pencil.


Brush the dark gray eye shadow underneath your eye using a small brush. Start with a thin line at the inside corner and get progressively thicker as you brush toward the outer corner. Blend the shadow under your eye up into the shadow in the outer corners of your upper lid, so that it is seamless.


Curl your upper lashes with a quality eyelash curler (see Resources for suggestions). Apply black mascara to your upper lashes in one coat on the back side, and two coats on the front. Apply the same mascara to the lower lashes. Blend your eye shadow by rubbing it slightly together with your finger. Repeat these steps on your other eye and you are done! All you need now, is a gown, and some pale pink lipstick, and you are ready for the red carpet!

8 Spots That Need Sunscreen




You know that sunscreen needs to be part of your daily routine. But no matter how SPF-vigilant you are, there will almost always be chinks in your UV armor.

We interviewed top dermatologists to see which areas of the body we most often miss with sunscreen, and where they see the most cases of basal-cell and squamous-cell skin cancers. (Basal-cell and squamous-cell cancers are typically the result of direct sun exposure; melanoma occurs on parts of the body that are not exposed to the sun.)

“The more sun exposure an area receives, the greater the risk of these types of skin cancer,” says Arielle Kauvar, a New York City dermatologist. How can you shore up your body’s weakest defenses and arm yourself with a nearly impermeable sun shield? Read on.

Scalp
One site where Erin M. Welch, M.D., a dermatologist in Denver, commonly sees skin cancer is “on the scalp, where women part their hair and burn.” Spray-on or powder sunscreens with brush applicators can help you here — as can a good old low-tech hat.

Ears
“I find a lot of pre-cancer on the ears,” says Howard Murad, M.D., a dermatologist in Los Angeles and the author of The Water Secret: The Cellular Breakthrough to Look and Feel 10 Years Younger. “Generally a little more on the left side of the face than the right, because of sun exposure there when we’re driving.” To remember to apply sunscreen even when you’re behind car windows, keep SPF 30 handy in your glove compartment or purse.

Eyelids
According to Dr. Kauvar, 5 to 10 percent of skin cancers occur on the eyelids. She recommends wearing UV-protective wrap-around sunglasses, especially if your eye area is sensitive to sunscreen.

Lips
Protecting the lips can be tricky, because they require their own product. “It’s a particularly dangerous area for skin cancers, because the rate of metastasis [internal spread] for squamous-cell cancers, which is 1 percent for most areas of the skin, can be high as 20 percent on the lips,” explains Dr. Welch. “I recommend that my patients wear an SPF 30 lip balm and reapply it often.” Or wear lipstick: One scientific study hypothesized that lipstick wearers have lower incidences of skin cancer because the pigments in lipstick protect against the sun’s harmful rays.

Neck and Chest
Women know to cover their face with sunscreen, but the neck and décolletage are not always on their radar. “I’ve removed many basal- and squamous-cell skin cancers off women’s chests, and the back and the sides of the neck get forgotten, too,” says Dr. Welch. Outdoor enthusiasts, such as golfers, tend to get skin cancer on the back of the neck, says Jessica Wu, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles and the author of Feed Your Face. Don’t neglect your neck: Liberally apply sunscreen throughout the area, especially if you often wear V-neck or scoop-neck shirts.

Hands
The tops of your hands, constantly exposed to the sun, are one area of the body that can show your true age and cumulative UV damage. Dr. Murad sees many cases of pre-cancer here, as well as on the forearms. For protection, use a hand cream with SPF 30.

Swimsuit Edges
Beachgoers often forget to attend to the edges around their bathing suit and straps. “I have many patients who get a thin line of sunburn along the borders of their bathing suit because they didn’t want to get the messy sunscreen on their suit,” says Dr. Welch. Her advice: Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before you put on your suit, so it has a chance to dry.

Feet
According to Dr. Kauvar, the tops of the feet are an often-overlooked part of the body. If you wear sandals frequently, don’t forget to apply sunscreen here, too.

If you want a smoother, clearer complexion, Jessica Wu, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at USC Medical School and a dermatologist in Los Angeles, encourages you to toss all six of these fortifying Feed Your Face foods into your grocery cart.

Tomatoes
Definitely one of your skin’s best defenses, tomatoes contain a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. While studies have not yet been entirely conclusive, many suggest that lycopene may be responsible for helping to protect the skin against sun damage.

Lycopene is best absorbed by the body when it has been cooked or processed, so eating tomato sauce, tomato paste, and ketchup is likely to be more effective than just eating raw tomatoes when trying to safeguard your skin against harmful UV rays. Lycopene is also fat soluble, which means that it is absorbed more easily when consumed with fat, such as eggs, avocado, and olive oil.

Red Meat
Sometimes it gets a bad rap, and even though red meat does contain saturated fat and cholesterol, lean red meat is one of Dr. Wu’s favorite Feed Your Face foods because it’s so high in protein and zinc. In fact, recent studies suggest that red meat may be even better at treating acne than antibiotics.

To produce collagen, your skin needs the amino acids glycine and proline, and the protein in red meat has the highest concentration of these two amino acids. The mineral zinc is also crucial for collagen production. “It’s an essential cofactor,” says Dr. Wu. “Without enough zinc, it’s difficult for the skin to make collagen. Plus, zinc is a natural anti-inflammatory.” And vegetarians don’t need to miss out. Dr. Wu adds that high concentrations of glycine can also be found in seafood, proline in cottage cheese and cabbage, and zinc in lentils, kidney beans, and raw oysters.

Green Tea
It’s no secret that green tea is an antioxidant powerhouse. Its strong anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects are attributed to its high concentration of catechin compounds. Studies have shown that green tea can be used both orally and topically to help protect the skin from sunburns and UV-associated skin cancers. Research also suggests that drinking one cup of green tea twice a day over the course of six months may actually reverse sun damage and significantly improve any problems you have with redness and broken capillary veins.

Green Beans
As long as we’re going green, let’s talk about how these low-calorie beans can help you grow thicker hair and healthier nails. Green beans are a star Feed Your Face food because they’re one of the richest sources of silicon — not to be confused with silicone, which is found in bad lip jobs and breast implants! The USDA has not yet established recommended daily intakes (RDIs) of silicon, but 10 mg per day seems to be adequate for strengthening hair and nails, according to recent studies. Dr. Wu recommends choosing organic green beans, since they retain more silicon from the soil. Don’t like green beans? If you’re concerned with redness, swelling, blotchiness, acne breakouts, or wrinkles, walnuts may be your new best friend. Plant-based omega-3s, such as the ones found in walnuts, are naturally anti-inflammatory; they can help seal moisture into your skin and protect it from chemicals and other toxins. In particular, the alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in these omega-3s can work to combat the dryness associated with aging that leads to wrinkles. But don’t stop with walnuts; you can also increase the amount of plant-based omega-3s in your diet by eating almonds, olive oil, and flaxseed, too.

Yogurt
Not only is it the main ingredient in the best smoothies, yogurt is a natural probiotic, which means that it helps replenish the “good” bacteria in your body and keeps yeast in check. This can come in handy if you have gastrointestinal issues or you’re prone to yeast infections, but what does it have to do with feeding your face? Well, according to Dr. Wu, yogurt is an excellent Feed Your Face food for dealing with acne breakouts, eczema, and even dandruff.
